KOBUSHI MAGNOLIA こぶし Magnolia kobus
CLASSIFICATION: Magnolia Family
GENERAL： Mid-sized deciduous broad-leaved tree. Most common native magnolia in lowland forests and countryside woodlands. Also widely planted in parks and along streets.
SOFUKEI WOOD: Occasional
TRUNK/BARK: Trunk straight. Bark smooth and whitish-grey.
LEAVES: Alternate, obovate (narrow waist – broad shoulders), about 10cm long. Edges entire (smooth, with no serrations)
WINTER BUD: Flower bud covered in soft grey hair. A single leaf appears at base of the flower as the bud opens.
FLOWERS: large (10cm in diameter) flowers with six white tepals. Blooms in mid-March, before the leaves appear. Tepals spread out wide, providing easy landing pads for clumsy beetles.
FRUITS: Reddish-orange seeds encased in knobby pod that splits open when ripe. Seeds dangle on thin white thread for a while before falling.
COMPARE: In woodlands; ho-noki (M. obovate) has much larger leaves (up to 40cm long), also larger flowers and seed pods. Flowers bloom much later (May). In parks and gardens; haku-mokuren (M. denudata) blooms around the same time as kobushi, but has larger, more creamier-white flowers with no leaf at the base.

一般：雑木林に普通に見られる、中高木の落葉広葉樹。公園樹としても利用される。
草深の森：実生で増えるが、その数は決して多くない。
樹皮/幹；幹は直立し、樹皮は滑らかで灰白色をしている。
葉：葉は互生する単葉で、形は倒卵形（とうらんけい）。長さは10cm前後で、縁にギザギザのない全縁（ぜんえん ）。
冬芽：柔らかい毛に包まれ、まるで豪華な毛皮をまとった大正時代の貴婦人のようだ。
花：3月中旬に開花し、開花と同時に基部に小さな葉が1枚つく。虫媒花で、6枚の白い花被片 (花弁３枚、萼片３枚)は横に広がり、不器用なコガネムシも安全に降りられる。
果実：赤オレンジ色の種は、ふしくれた袋果の中で育つ。熟すと袋果が裂け、種は細い糸にぶら下がる。
比較：雑木林に生えるホオノキは、葉、花、果実のいずれも大きい。開花は5月と遅い。街路樹や公園樹として見られるハクモクレンは、コブシとほぼ同じ時期に開花するが、花が少し大きく、色はよりクリーミーホワイトである。花の基部には葉が付かない。
